Johannesburg police nail rape suspect

Johannesburg Central police have arrested a 38-year-old man at the New Africa Tavern on the corner of Anderson and Ntemi Mpiliso streets in connection with rape, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

It was alleged that the man raped a 29–year-old woman in bushes on the corner of Anderson and Main Reef roads on Friday night, Captain Xoli Mbele said.

The victim had caught a taxi at Kruis Street and been dropped off at Westgate. There she asked a man wearing a reflector jacket about a taxi to Brixton, thinking that he was a security guard.

The man walked with her until they reached the bushes, where he threatened her with a knife and raped her. The half naked woman managed to escape after the rape and ran in front of a moving truck. The truck driver rescued her and took her to a police station.

Swift response by the police led to the arrest of the suspect on Saturday. He was wearing a jersey and track suit pants belonging to the victim. Her bag containing her clothes was also recovered in his shack.

The investigation was continuing and man would appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. “Police would like to thank the truck driver who stopped and assisted the victim,” Mbele said.
