Executive Mayor Dada Morero has marked his first year in office with a candid assessment of the city’s achievements and ongoing challenges, emphasizing infrastructure repairs and service delivery improvements.
In an interview, Morero pointed to significant progress in road maintenance, including the resurfacing of major roads as part of the city’s campaign against potholes. “We are winning the war on potholes,” Morero declared, highlighting the rehabilitation of key routes across Johannesburg.
Another critical project nearing completion is the repair of Lilian Ngoyi Street, which was severely damaged in an explosion nearly three years ago. The mayor confirmed that the first phase of reconstruction is set to be unveiled by the end of next month, with the second phase expected to wrap up within the next three to four months.
Water Infrastructure Upgrades
Morero also outlined efforts to address Johannesburg’s aging water infrastructure, revealing that the city has allocated funds for pipe replacements and the refurbishment of 25 water reservoirs, some of which are over 50 years old.
“We are refurbishing reservoirs that have been damaged and are in very poor condition,” he said. Additionally, the Brixton Reservoir and Tower, a crucial water supply project, is nearing completion and should be operational within the next month, helping alleviate water supply challenges in the region.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Despite these advancements, Morero acknowledged that contractual disputes had delayed some projects, including the Lilian Ngoyi Street repairs. However, he assured residents that the city is now “on track” to deliver the promised upgrades.
As Johannesburg moves forward, Morero’s administration remains focused on infrastructure renewal and service delivery, with residents eagerly awaiting the completion of key projects in the coming months.
