Police re-arrested Sbonelo Nkosingiphe Thwala (27) who escaped from South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on 5 December 2018. He escaped while appearing for possession of unlicensed firearm and murder he committed in Jeppe, Johannesburg, in April last year.

Thwala was re-arrested at his hiding place in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, on Thursday 4 April 2019. During his re-arrest, he was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

He will appear at Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 8 April 2019, facing a charge of escaping from lawful custody. He is expected back at the High Court for the initial charge of murder and possession of unlicensed firearm.

After his escape, a team of detectives has been working tirelessly to apprehend him. Police received information about his possible whereabouts and went into the house in the early hours of Thursday morning where he was arrested.

The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, would like to thank the community that assisted the police in locating the wanted suspect and also applauds the investigating team that worked so hard to ensure that the escapee is re-arrested.
