Anti-crime operations in the Johannesburg Central policing cluster from Friday to Sunday morning resulted in the arrest of 226 people for various offences, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
Suspects were arrested around Mondeor, Booysens, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Fairlands, Sophiatown, Brixton, and Johannesburg Central, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.
The arrests included eight for common robbery, four for business robbery, five for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, two for house robbery, six for housebreaking and theft, three for theft out of motor vehicle, two for rape, two for possession of unlicensed firearms, seven for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, five for domestic violence, two for armed robbery, 41 for drunk driving, 38 for possession of drugs, and eight for malicious damage to property.
The rest of the suspects were arrested for committing other crimes, ranging from impersonating police officers, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of suspected stolen property, common assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), theft, shoplifting, a undocumented person, and fraud.
Most of the suspects would appear in various magistrate’s courts in the Johannesburg area on Monday, Mbele said.
