In a pre-dawn operation today, Johannesburg authorities arrested more than a dozen undocumented immigrants during a raid at the Ginger Informal Settlement in Sandton. The joint operation, led by the City of Johannesburg and the Department of Home Affairs, targeted illegal structures and by-law violations in the northern suburbs.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero, who joined law enforcement officials, stated that the operation aimed to reclaim the city from illegal occupation and curb rising crime linked to informal settlements.
Crackdown on Crime and Illegal Structures
Morero highlighted that criminal activity, including drug dealing, was rampant in the area. “We identified a shack where drugs were being sold, and police arrested the suspect while confiscating substances,” he said. Another location contained drugs linked to Nyaope (a highly addictive street drug), though the suspects escaped before arrest.
Unoccupied and incomplete shacks were demolished during the operation, with at least eight structures removed to prevent further illegal occupation.
Community Frustrations Amid Raids
Residents of the settlement voiced their struggles, citing a lack of basic services. “We don’t have electricity here. We can’t charge phones, we can’t work—we can only complain to the government,” one resident said.
More Raids to Come
Morero warned that such operations would intensify, emphasizing that lawlessness in informal settlements would not be tolerated. “These raids will become more frequent,” he stated, signaling a tougher stance against illegal occupation and crime.
The operation reflects the city’s broader efforts to address housing and migration challenges while tackling crime—a contentious issue as authorities balance enforcement with the needs of vulnerable communities.
