The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has reaffirmed its commitment to road safety with a stringent clampdown on drunk driving, arresting 145 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol between 30 June and 6 July 2025.
Zero-Tolerance Enforcement
The arrests were made during targeted operations, including roadblocks and routine patrols, as part of the JMPD’s ongoing efforts to curb reckless driving and reduce alcohol-related accidents.
JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca condemned the behaviour of offenders, stressing that drunk driving remains a leading cause of road fatalities.
“The safety of our citizens on Johannesburg’s roads is non-negotiable,” Commissioner Jaca stated. “The arrest of 145 motorists in just one week sends a clear message: if you drink and drive, you will be caught and prosecuted. We urge all motorists to act responsibly—use designated drivers or alternative transport if you consume alcohol. Our officers will remain vigilant to ensure compliance with the law.”
Ongoing Road Safety Efforts
The JMPD has vowed to sustain high-visibility operations to enforce traffic laws and deter motorists from endangering lives. Authorities warned that driving under the influence carries severe legal consequences, including fines, license suspension, and imprisonment.
Motorists were reminded that drunk driving not only risks their lives but also jeopardizes pedestrians and other road users. The JMPD encouraged the public to report reckless drivers via its emergency hotlines.
As road safety remains a key priority, the department pledged to intensify operations during peak periods, including weekends and holidays, to prevent avoidable tragedies.
