JEPPESTOWN, GAUTENG — A major law enforcement operation in Johannesburg has culminated in a deadly Jeppestown shootout, leaving one suspected cash-in-transit robber dead and triggering a massive manhunt for two other fugitives. Gauteng police are currently investigating multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, following the intense exchange of gunfire in the city center.

The incident unfolded on the morning of Friday, October 30, 2026, at approximately 09:45. Acting on intelligence regarding an alleged cash-in-transit robbery plot, a multidisciplinary law enforcement team was rapidly deployed. The joint task force comprised the SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Gauteng Traffic Airwing, the CAP Specialised Unit, Tracker Connect, and the SAPS Investigation of Violence and Organised Crime.

Officers successfully tracked a white Suzuki Ertiga traveling along the N3 highway in the direction of the George Goch Hostel. However, during the pursuit, the suspects allegedly initiated a firefight by opening fire on the pursuing officers, resulting in a severe shootout.

The chase ultimately ended outside the Jeppe Train Station, where the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. According to a Gauteng police spokesperson, one of the fleeing suspects continued to aggressively engage the officers using an AK-47 rifle. This suspect was fatally wounded by police during the ensuing confrontation.

Following the shootout, law enforcement recovered an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and live ammunition at the scene. The two remaining suspects managed to escape on foot, and authorities have launched an extensive manhunt to trace them. While two law enforcement vehicles sustained damage from the gunfire, a spokesperson for the police confirmed that miraculously, no officers were injured during the operation.

In accordance with standard legal procedures involving the discharge of firearms by state security personnel, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was called to the scene. An IPID spokesperson indicated that the directorate has taken charge of the area and that investigations into the fatal shooting are actively ongoing.
