JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG — Law enforcement investigators have arrested a suspended officer and launched a targeted manhunt for additional suspects in connection with the R14 million precious gems theft involving members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD). The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that the sprawling corruption probe, which stems from a fraudulent 2023 police raid, is rapidly expanding with more arrests expected imminently.

The investigation centers on an alleged rogue operation conducted in 2023, where officers posing as a joint law enforcement task team raided a residential property in Killarney, Johannesburg, without a warrant. Operating entirely outside their jurisdiction, the suspects allegedly seized precious stones valued at nearly R15 million. According to authorities, the stolen gems were subsequently sold for a mere R110,000. Furthermore, the exhibits were never registered in the official police occurrence book, and some of the precious stones were reportedly discovered in the personal vehicle of one of the EMPD officials.

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that the original plot involved six individuals. As of the latest tactical operation, authorities have executed three arrest warrants on charges of corruption. One suspended EMPD officer was apprehended last night and is scheduled to appear in a regional court on Monday. Investigators are currently tracking two other suspects who remain at large: a former EMPD officer and a civilian businessman who owns a security company and allegedly posed as a police officer during the illicit raid. Suping noted that investigators are following intelligence leads and conducting surveillance across various locations, including properties in Benoni, to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The probe heavily implicates high-ranking figures within the EMPD, including suspended deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi. The details of the collusion were notably brought to light during the Madlanga Commission, where a witness testifying under the pseudonym “Witness K”—who claimed to be Mkhwanazi’s love interest—detailed how the rogue unit was orchestrated to steal the lucrative stones. Of the six original suspects, one traffic police officer has since died. Suping indicated that paperwork is being finalized to issue arrest warrants for the two remaining individuals, meaning the net is closing in on all involved.

The gems heist is just one of several high-profile scandals plaguing the EMPD that have been heavily scrutinized at the Madlanga Commission. When pressed on other major investigations, including the murder of Emmanuel Mbense and the controversial “blue light” scandal, Suping stated that these dockets are at a very advanced stage. She confirmed that the investigation dockets have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and that decisions have been received, hinting that arrests in these matters are also imminent. Additionally, she noted that the docket concerning the national deputy commissioner for the SAPS is still pending a decision from the DPP.

Addressing claims of stalling, Suping defended IPID’s progress, attributing the timeline to the necessary legal processes and the concurrent Madlanga Commission proceedings. Acknowledging that there are indeed “rogue elements” within the EMPD, she emphasized that these bad apples must be held accountable, while noting that the majority of police officers remain dedicated to their duties. As surveillance continues, authorities remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and the dismantling of the alleged criminal enterprise operating within the ranks of law enforcement.
