Tensions are rising in the Ingedi informal settlement in Roodepoort as residents resist eviction amid a long-delayed demolition project. The City of Johannesburg claims the process, which began four years ago, followed proper procedures, but current occupants allege forceful removal without adequate documentation or communication.
Temporary accommodation has been provided, yet residents argue the relocation site is unsafe, citing high crime rates, including a fatal shooting. Many, some of whom have lived there for 18 years, express distress over demolished homes, toilets and disrupted lives.
The city insists the land is privately owned and earmarked for a substation due to insufficient power capacity. Officials state that original residents were relocated in two phases, leaving only four unqualified individuals. They accuse community leaders of illegally reoccupying units with undocumented migrants.
While the city promises secure temporary housing, displaced families demand relocation to nearby flats, leaving the standoff unresolved.
