Hundreds arrested in Johannesburg central anti-crime ops

Police from the Johannesburg central policing cluster stations arrested 249 people and confiscated drugs, firearms, and various other items during crime combating operations from the Friday to Sunday morning, Gauteng police said.

Suspects were arrested around Mondeor, Booysens, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Fairlands, Sophiatown, Brixton, and Johannesburg Central, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.

The arrests included 16 for common robbery, eight for armed robbery, three for car hi-jacking, two for murder, four for housebreaking and theft, three for theft out of a motor vehicle, one for rape, two for possession of unlicensed firearms, two for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, five for domestic violence, three for possession of carbreaking implements, 64 for drunk driving, 54 for possession of drugs, and 11 for malicious damage to property.

The rest of the suspects were arrested for committing other crimes ranging from possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of suspected stolen property, common assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), theft, bribery, shoplifting, and fraud.

Most of the suspects would appear in various magistrate’s court in the Johannesburg area on Monday, Mbele said.
