An off duty police officer responded to the call of duty and swiftly acted on information that led to the recovery of a hijacked truck, trailer and goods worth about R5 million.
A police officer from Benoni Flying Squad received information about a truck that was allegedly hijacked driving pass Gray Avenue in Alberton. The member acted swiftly and proceeded to the area where he spotted the truck fitted with the Kwa-Zulu Natal registration number.
With the assistance of the community and patrollers, the police managed to apprehend the driver who tried to evade arrest by running away. Further information led the police to N12 Xavier Off Ramp where they recovered a trailer with two containers taken from the truck that was hijacked, already fitted with false registration numbers.
The owner of the truck identified the cargo worth millions of Rand still on the containers.
The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange, commends the community for working together with the police in the fight against crime and also commend the police, particularly the off duty police officer, for their swift response that led to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the hijacked truck, trailer and containers.
The arrested suspect will be charged with possession of hijacked truck and will appear at Alberton Magistrate Court in due course.
