A suspect was fatally wounded and two others injured during a shootout with police in Naturena, Johannesburg on Tuesday, 14 May 2019.

Police officers from K9 were patrolling on the N12 freeway when they spotted men in two cars, a Ford Ranger and an Audi, looking suspicious. A high speed chase ensued after the drivers failed to stop on the police’s signal, but instead accelerated and started shooting at the police.

The suspects driving the Ford Ranger were cornered in Naturena after they lost control of the car. One suspect was fatally shot and two suspects were injured and taken to hospital under police guard. None of the police officers were injured.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the car driven by the suspects was reported stolen in Hillbrow last month. Police have opened a case of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of suspected stolen vehicle for further investigation.

Investigation is underway to establish if these criminals cannot be linked to other crimes.
