The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Hekpoort has welcomed the life imprisonment sentence handed to 34-year-old Thabang Kobedi by the Magistrate’s Court on 18 May 2026 for rape and related offences.

The conviction follows an incident that occurred on Wednesday, 2 April 2025, at approximately 20:00, when police responded to a complaint of assault. Upon arrival, officers found a 60-year-old man suffering from multiple facial injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the elderly man had allegedly been assaulted by Kobedi. The victim informed police that he had been with his wife prior to the attack. Working alongside community members, police conducted a search for the woman and successfully located her. It was subsequently established that she had allegedly been raped by the suspect.

Kobedi was later traced and arrested. The case was assigned to Sergeant Motlatsi Mashiloane of the West Rand District Detectives Unit for further investigation. Through diligent investigative work and collaboration, the team secured a successful conviction.

On sentencing, Kobedi received:

  • Life imprisonment for rape;
  • Four years’ imprisonment for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH);
  • Four years’ imprisonment for common assault.

Warrant Officer Mavis Tlhoaele, Acting Station Commander of Hekpoort SAPS, welcomed the court’s decision and commended the investigating team and community members for their cooperation and support throughout the process.

“The successful conviction underscores the importance of partnership between police and the communities we serve,” said Warrant Officer Tlhoaele. “We urge members of the public to continue reporting criminal activities and working closely with law enforcement agencies to combat crime.”

The sentence reflects the judiciary’s commitment to holding perpetrators of gender-based violence and violent crime accountable under South African law.
