The suspended head of Gauteng’s Department of Health, Dr. Barney Selebano, resigned.

Selebano approved the transfer of patients from the Life Esidimeni facility to unregistered facilities. The relocation resulted in 143 patients died.

During Selebano’s appointment, Jack Bloom of the DA sang praises about Selebano and said he is a well-qualified doctor, he has integrity and that he will bring stability to the department. It apparently did not happen, and the fact that Selebono was able to write an MBChB from Medunsa behind his name did not mean he was qualified to observe patients’ supervision.

Selebono was the fifth head of the department in six years to resign after four previous heads resigned for unknown reasons.

Meanwhile, Philip van Staden of the FF Plus, said, that Selebano will not be prosecuted due to his resignation.

“Selebano accepted responsibility for the tragedy that took place during the trial. He said if such a tragedy happens under your leadership, you should not walk away. What he is doing now by resigning is not following his own advice.”

“The FF Plus is also of the opinion that Gauteng Premier David Makhura does not have to accept Selebano’s resignation, as it seems that the Premier wants to cover up events,” said Mr. Van Staden.
