Hawks seize 184 firearms in Gauteng operation

A joint operation was conducted in Gauteng by Hawks’ National Bureau for Illegal Firearms Control and Priority Violent Crimes (NBIFCPVC) Western Cape in conjunction with the Forensic Science Laboratory Ballistic Unit Western Cape, LCRC, K9 unit and DPCI Head Office members.

The search and seizure operation was carried out on three business premises from 21 until 23 August 2018 in Meyerton, Henley on Klip and Johannesburg. This resulted in the seizure of 184 firearms which includes 115 revolvers, 5 pistols, 60 shotguns and 4 rifles.

This seizure follows an intensive investigation that ensued in Cape Town and progressed to Gauteng on the alleged lack of proper control of legal firearm stocks by the legal owners.

The confiscated firearms will be subjected to further forensic analysis in order to establish their origins and whether they were used in the commission of any criminal offences.

No arrests were made at this stage, pending the outcome of the on going investigation into the contravention on prescripts of the Firearms Control Act.
