Inmate Sipesihle Nyathi (34) is to spend an effective 30 years’ imprisonment for an attempted cross pavement cash robbery that took place at the Glen shopping complex on 29 September 2020.
On the day of the incident Fidelity Cash Solutions security officers were at the shopping centre to deliver cash to Bidvest Bank.
Whist walking towards the bank they were accosted by two armed suspects who robbed them of a cash bag containing an undisclosed of money and pistols.
The suspects then fled on foot towards the exit of the mall but another security officer shot and injured Nyathi culminating in his arrest whilst his accomplice managed to fled.
The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime investigation team were tasked with further investigation.
Through the investigation it was established that Nyathi was positively linked to another armed robbery case that occurred at Builders Warehouse reported at Sebenza police station in April 2011.
He was additionally charged for that case and it was finalised in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court where he was handed a 10 years’ imprisonment sentence.
For the Glen Shopping complex robbery the case was heard in the Booysens Regional Court late on 16 February 2023. The court convicted and sentenced Nyathi on two counts; robbery with aggravated circumstances and attempted murder. Sentences of twenty years and ten years Imprisonment were imposed on him.
It was ordered that the sentences should not run concurrently meaning an effective thirty years imprisonment.
