Deputy Police Commissioner General Fred Kekana has detailed a large-scale multidisciplinary operation underway in the province, aimed at enhancing safety and tackling key challenges, including undocumented migration and gender-based violence (GBV).
The operation, led by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, involves collaboration across all five districts and municipalities in the province. Kekana emphasized the integrated approach, which includes law enforcement, local government, and community initiatives.
Premier Lesufi expressed concern over the number of undocumented individuals in Gauteng, calling their presence “disturbing.” Police arrested 167 people without legal documentation during the operation. “We don’t know who they are or where they come from,” Lesufi stated, urging swift action against illegal immigration.
Additionally, the premier highlighted Gauteng’s struggle with GBV, labeling the province as the “epicenter” of such crimes in South Africa. While other crime statistics have shown improvement, GBV remains stubbornly high.
Key activities in the operation included school safety campaigns, waste management, illegal dumping cleanups, road repairs, and increased visible policing. The initiative reflects the province’s broader efforts to improve security and infrastructure.
