Police in Gauteng seized twelve firearms in the past 24 hours during operations and arrested twenty suspects. The suspects have been linked to serious and violent crimes which include murder, house robbery, hijacking, housebreaking, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen properties.

Police recovered six pistols after a shooting happened in Mamelodi. Information was received through crime intelligence about the armed suspects who were shooting in Mamelodi hostel on the 30 August 2020. Police officers from Ekurhuleni TRT and members from Trio task team went to the house where the suspects were hiding. During the search, three unlicensed firearms were seized and seven suspects were arrested. A man was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm during an operation and two other firearms were seized during stop and search operations in Mamelodi.

On Friday, police officers from Johannesburg Flying Squad received information from Crime Intelligence about an Uber taxi driver who was to commit a robbery in Cleveland. An operation was conducted in the area, the Uber taxi was spotted and stopped. During the search, two unlicensed firearms were recovered and three suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms.

Meanwhile two firearms were recovered in New Canada Informal Settlement and four suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and robbery as they were linked to other serious and violent crimes in Florida.

In Ekurhuleni on Friday 11 September 2020, police who were conducting stop and search operations arrested four suspects after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearms in the vehicle they were travelling in.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the work well done by the on the ground and urged the community to continue to work with the police to fight crime by calling Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or by giving a tip-off on the MySAPS app.

The arrested suspects will appear in the various Magistrate Courts in Gauteng on Monday 14 September 2020
