Johannesburg, Gauteng – Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile has re-tabled the province’s 2025/2026 budget, increasing revenue projections from R171.5 billion to R172.3 billion—an additional R886.6 million aimed at addressing key priorities, including service delivery and preparations for the upcoming G20 Summit in Johannesburg this November.

The budget revision follows Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s adjustments to the national budget in May, ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Maile emphasized that the extra funds would support critical initiatives, including economic recovery efforts and job creation.

Boosting Employment and Tackling Economic Challenges

Expressing concern over Gauteng’s high unemployment and crime rates, Maile announced an additional R50 million allocation to the Premier’s Office to fund Nasi Ispani, a job-creation initiative expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities.

“We know unemployment is high, so for now, we are allocating these funds, but we are also reviewing our resources to potentially increase funding for economic activities,” Maile stated. A further R100 million has been earmarked for SMME development, aiming to unlock opportunities from recent investment conferences.

Addressing Debt and Improving Financial Systems

Maile reaffirmed Gauteng’s commitment to servicing its e-toll debt, clarifying that payments would exceed the previously stated R3.8 billion. “We are budgeting for it, and we will pay,” he said, though exact figures were not disclosed.

The province also plans to digitize invoice processes and establish an Invoice Ombudsman to enhance financial efficiency and accountability.

Progress on Crowd Train Expansion

Regarding the long-awaited Gautrain expansion project, Maile indicated that the successful bidder to operate the system would be announced soon.

The revised budget reflects Gauteng’s dual focus on immediate economic relief and long-term infrastructure development, with the G20 Summit serving as a catalyst for both investment and service delivery improvements.
