JOHANNESBURG — The Gauteng Police have issued a public warning after a fake Mayfair attack video began circulating on social media, clarifying that the footage actually depicts the 2021 lootings rather than recent violence involving foreign nationals.

Law enforcement management confirmed that the viral clip—which alleges South African citizens are currently being targeted by foreign nationals in the Johannesburg suburb of Mayfair—is entirely false. Upon review, authorities determined the recording is recycled media originally captured during the widespread looting protests of 2021.

Officials emphasized the severe risks associated with distributing unverified digital media. According to the police, sharing such fabricated content triggers unnecessary public panic, carries the potential to spark real-world violence, and actively sabotages ongoing government and law enforcement initiatives to preserve community peace and uphold the law.

In response to the viral trend, the police are calling on all residents to exercise caution and responsibility across social media platforms. Citizens are strongly advised to thoroughly verify the authenticity of any digital content before posting or forwarding it to others.
