The evasive answer provided by the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Morakane Mosupyoe, in response to a question on race-based financial aid to business enterprises is a cause for concern.

During a virtual session of the Portfolio Committee, Mosupyoe was asked to explain why Premier David Makhura announced last week during a session of the Legislature that business enterprises in informal settlements will primarily be the ones to receive financial aid.

Mosupyoe indicated that she had already answered the question during the session of the Legislature. In that specific Legislature session, she said that the question regarding race and aid made her very uncomfortable and that it was inappropriate. She later conceded that race will not be a factor.

The FF Plus, however, remains sceptical and will keep a close eye on the matter of government aid.

Financial aid to business enterprises must not be race-based as it will be to the detriment of the workers affiliated with small and medium enterprises, which are already struggling to survive financially.

Selective assistance only brings about division and, thus, it is important that the ANC government clearly and transparently defines the process of financial aid to eliminate any more confusion.
