The Gauteng Provincial Government and its implementing partner for the Anti-Substance Abuse Social Movement, Soul City Institute, have launched a campaign against drug and alcohol abuse.
The campaign aimed at driving social mobilisation awareness in communities, schools and tertiary institutions was launched in Sandton on Wednesday.
Onkemetse Kabasia, deputy director general for the Gauteng department of social development, said: “This is the beginning and we promising that the ‘keep it 100’ campaign will be sustained in the next three years and we would be working very hard moving forward”.
The Gauteng City Region (GCR) is increasingly becoming a centre of substance abuse and illicit trafficking due to the easy availability of the cheap but devastating drug “nyaope” – a crude concoction of low-grade heroin cut with anything from rat poison to chlorine.
Earlier in March this year Gauteng Premier David Makhura launched the GCR Anti-Substance Abuse Social Movement in Eldorado Park in a move to intensify government programmes and partnership with communities to fight the scourge of substance abuse.
On Wednesday the province launched the new campaign as a response to the increasing levels of substance abuse, especially among young people in the province. It focuses on three pillars – Harm Reduction, Demand Reduction and Supply Reduction.
