The Gauteng government acknowledges that the R15 billion Gauteng Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is a massive failure and buses are not being used efficiently by passengers.
Express bus facilities are built at huge amounts of money in the main centers of the province, which disrupt the normal movement in particular cases, and now it seems that only about 75 000 people use the service, which means that buses even in peak time remain empty. Commuters still prefer the minibus taxis and traditional buses.
In contrast, it would appear that Cape Town MyCity project is working.
Despite the admission, Gauteng is going ahead with the first phase between Vosloorus and Thembisa which will involve 56 stations at R50 million per station.
The system is clearly not profitable, yet the government still spends millions. Now it is asked who takes advantage of building the stations, and who are the intermediaries?
