SOWETO, Gauteng — An 18-year-old learner at Forth Hare Secondary School in Meadowlands was fatally attacked in an incident authorities describe as gang-related violence, prompting strong condemnation from provincial education officials and a renewed call for community calm.

According to police, the learner was assaulted yesterday by individuals allegedly affiliated with a rival group and sustained severe injuries from a panga. He was transported to a nearby clinic in a private vehicle for emergency treatment but later succumbed to his wounds.

Capt Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for SAPS Gauteng, confirmed the sequence of events: “The victim sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local clinic in a private vehicle for medical treatment. He later succumbed to his injuries.” Sibeko added that investigations are ongoing, no arrests have been made, and the motive for the attack remains under review.

Lebogang Maile, Gauteng Education MEC, expressed the province’s grief and resolve. “As a province, we are deeply saddened and disturbed by this incident. No child should lose their life to violence and no family should have to endure such pain. We trust that law enforcement authorities will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.”

In response to the killing, the Johannesburg West Education District convened an urgent meeting with parents to address escalating concerns about gangsterism affecting learners. Tensions reportedly flared outside the school as some students expressed anger and sought retribution. Parents at the gathering emphasized unity and prevention, noting this tragedy is not isolated. One parent referenced a prior case involving a relative, stating, “We also have a case of my little nephew. He was affected by this gangsterism thing while he was going to write. The case is still ongoing.”

Education officials have urged the community to remain calm and cooperate with investigators. The Gauteng Education Department reiterated its stance that schools must be safe spaces and called on law enforcement to dedicate all necessary resources to apprehend those responsible.

Police continue to appeal for information from the public as the investigation proceeds.
