The resignation of Makgabo Manamela, suspended director of the Gauteng Department of Health, barely twenty-four hours after the departure of the head of the department, Barney Selebano, proves that he jumped from the sinking ship to avoid further prosecution, said Philip van Staden, FF Plus LPW in the Gauteng legislature.

“The FF Plus has already stated that Selebano will not escape prosecution. Manamela must also face further prosecution. The FF Plus will ensure that anyone who has a share in the Esidimeni tragedy will be prosecuted.”

“Gauteng Premier David Makhura still has to accept Manamela’s resignation and will probably approve it after accepting Selebano’s resignation. If the Premier would accept the resignations, it confirms the FF Plus’s position that the Premier wants to cover up the matter. This will also mean that the FF Plus has no choice but to prosecute the premier too.”

“Manamela was involved in issuing licenses to illegal non-governmental organizations to accommodate psychiatric patients. Among other things, she issued a license to Kalafong House.”

“The FF Plus expressed the hope that the premier will not accept resignations before the arbitration hearing is over. The FF Plus believes that these accused people now resign to escape prosecution. However, it will not be so easy because they will be further pursued.”

“These resignations within twenty-four hours also sets the stage for the former MEC Qedani Mahlangu not showing up from London for her questioning at the hearing with the resumption later in January. The latest will cause Mahlangu never to return and walk away from these crimes,” said Van Staden.
