Four suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout with police in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg, following a business robbery in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD).

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a crime intelligence-led operation was conducted on Sunday, 13 July 2025, after a robbery at a local shop. A multidisciplinary team, including the Tactical Response Team (TRT), Anti-Gang Unit, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI), and private security partners, tracked the suspects to Riverlea.

When officers attempted to stop the suspects, they allegedly opened fire, prompting a shootout. Three suspects died at the scene, while a fourth was later declared dead by paramedics. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and stolen items linked to the robbery.

SAPS is investigating charges of business robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms. No officers were injured in the incident.

Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as investigations continue.
