BENONI — A 74-year-old former apartheid askari is facing 15 murder charges after appearing in the Benoni Regional Court on 25 June 2026. The historic court appearance marks a significant development in the ongoing pursuit of accountability for state-sponsored violence and historical atrocities committed during the apartheid era.
Hawks Investigation and TRC Origins
The suspect was served with a summons to stand trial following a meticulous probe by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, widely known as the Hawks. The case was driven by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation’s Crimes Against the State Section.
According to investigators, the current legal proceedings stem directly from three specific matters that were originally tabled before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Deceptive Modus Operandi and Vlakplaas Connection
The Hawks investigation has formally linked the aging suspect to three notorious historical incidents: Operation Zero Zero, the Nietverdiend 10, and the KwaNdebele 9. Authorities note that these tragedies shared a chillingly consistent modus operandi.
Young individuals were systematically targeted and lured under the false pretense of receiving military training. The victims were deceived into believing they were being prepared to execute operations against the apartheid government. Instead of engaging in combat, the youths were handed explosives and smuggled out of the country.
Ultimately, the victims met their deaths at the hands of the suspect and two accomplices. The trio allegedly operated as a death squad out of the notorious Vlakplaas police farm, functioning under the direct command of Eugene de Kock.
Comprehensive Charge Sheet
Beyond the 15 counts of murder, the accused is confronting a severe docket of additional offenses related to the decades-old crimes. The formal charges brought before the regional court include:
– Arson
– Kidnapping
– Defeating or obstructing the administration of justice
– Unlawful possession of explosives
– Unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition
