360 Safety deposit boxes with people’s personal belonging in were stolen during a robbery that took place two weeks ago at the Randburg branch of First National Bank (FNB).
260 Safety deposit boxes were recovered in an open field next to FNB Stadium in Soweto, which does not leave much doubt about who was responsible for the robbery.
People who thought their valuables were safe locked away in a bank, is extremely disillusioned. It seems that all the valuables in the safety deposit boxes were removed and only the empty boxes found. This included jewelry and Krugerrands taken by the suspects. The robbers were not interested in the documents that remained in the boxes found.
The Hawks are continuing with the investigation and so far, nobody has been arrested in connection with the theft.
