Five suspects linked to cash-in-transit robberies were fatally wounded in a shootout with police in Crown Mines, Johannesburg, yesterday. The incident follows a nationwide crackdown on armed gangs targeting cash vehicles, particularly in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Intelligence-Led Operation
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni confirmed that the suspects were tracked from KwaZulu-Natal, where they were allegedly involved in a July 14 G4S cash van bombing in Kingsley. The suspects’ vehicle, linked to multiple crimes, was identified through crime intelligence before a confrontation erupted on the M2 highway.
“They engaged police with firearms, including an AK-47,” said Mthombeni. “Officers retaliated, resulting in five fatalities.” Police recovered an AK-47, a revolver, and cash notes from the scene.
National Crisis
Mthombeni emphasized that cash-in-transit heists remain a “national problem,” with Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal as hotspots. The suspects were also tied to a May 10 incident where two others were killed and weapons seized.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities are probing potential accomplices, though heavy rain briefly hampered forensic work. No bystanders were injured during the midday shootout in the busy industrial area.
Inter-Provincial Collaboration
The operation highlighted cooperation between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal police, with Mthombeni praising joint efforts to combat cross-border syndicates.
As investigations continue, police urge public vigilance, warning that more suspects may still be at large.
