Five suspects, aged between 35 and 50, were arrested shortly after allegedly carrying out a cash-in-transit robbery in Ekangala, Tshwane, on Wednesday, 04 June 2025. Police recovered one getaway vehicle and over a hundred rounds of ammunition, while authorities continue searching for at least six other suspects linked to the heist.
High-Speed Chase and Shootout
According to reports, the suspects used a BMW to ram a cash-in-transit van before bombing it and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money in multiple vehicles. Members of the Gauteng Highway Patrol quickly responded, spotting two getaway cars—a silver Mercedes-Benz and a silver Mazda CX-3. A high-speed pursuit ensued, during which the suspects opened fire on police officers, prompting a shootout.
One of the fleeing vehicles was chased until the driver lost control, after which the suspects abandoned the car and fled into a nearby maize field while continuing to shoot at law enforcement.
Joint Operation Leads to Arrests
Police, assisted by private security personnel, conducted an extensive search, leading to the arrest of five suspects. Inside the abandoned getaway car, authorities discovered a large cache of ammunition.
Suspects Linked to Previous Crimes
Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested individuals were out on bail for their alleged involvement in similar cash-in-transit robberies across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo provinces.
Ongoing Manhunt and Court Proceedings
The search for the remaining suspects remains active. The five arrested are expected to appear in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges including cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of ammunition. Police have indicated that further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses.
