JOHANNESBURG – A fatal house fire in Yeoville has claimed the life of 35-year-old Romeo Katompa, prompting the South African Police Service (SAPS) to open an inquest docket. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 16 July 2026.
Emergency services, including the Fire Brigade and Emergency Medical Services, responded to the scene at approximately 04:30. After the fire was successfully extinguished, the body of Mr. Katompa was discovered beneath the collapsed roof of the residence. Following the completion of necessary forensic processes, the remains were transported to the Government Mortuary.
Preliminary investigations and witness statements indicate that the deceased was inside the house when the fire broke out and was unable to escape. At this stage, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown and forms a central part of the ongoing investigation.
A South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson strongly condemned the circulation of false and misleading social media posts claiming that the incident was linked to anti-illegal immigration protests or any related acts of violence. The spokesperson emphasized that the spread of unverified information is irresponsible and actively undermines ongoing investigative efforts.
Law enforcement officials further highlighted that the circulation of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation poses a significant threat to social cohesion, public trust, and community stability. Authorities urged the public to critically evaluate content before sharing it, advising individuals to ask themselves: “Is it true?” before posting or reposting.
Police have formally requested that members of the public refrain from sharing speculative information, allowing investigators the necessary space to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
