A police officer was wounded in the early hours of Tuesday morning 27 August 2019, when attackers opened fire on him at his home on a smallholding in De Wagensdrift, north of Cullinan. Johan Riekert was hit four times through the windows of his house. André van Heerden, chairman of Cullinan’s sector 2 community policing forum (CPF), says about three attackers first shot Riekert through the kitchen window. Riekert shouted at his wife, who was sleeping, to call the police and ambulance.
“The neighbors heard the shots and reported it to our local WhatsApp group. Then the CPF and a local security company rushed them to the scene, ”says Van Heerden.
He said several shots were fired, but the attackers never entered the home.
“They shot Riekert through the windows of the house. He was shot in the chest, by the finger, in the stomach and in his left arm. ”
Van Heerden says Riekert lost a lot of blood. He was first taken to Montana Hospital in northern Pretoria, after which he was transported to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
He said police responded quickly. “The dog unit and forensic department were also on the scene.”
