A farm attack took place on Tuesday 24 May 2022, on a smallholding at Donkerhoek in the Boschkop area east of Pretoria in the Gauteng province of South Africa.
Vernich Smith (41), his wife Tanya, their three children and the children’s grandmother were all asleep when two black men entered the house through a window just after midnight.
They went to the room of the grandmother who woke up and began screaming.
Mr. Smith went to investigate and the two attackers held a rifle to his chest. He deflected the rifle away and two shots went off which hit him in both legs.
There were also a further three black male attackers outside but they all fled after taking just one cellphone.
A house robbery had also taken place just 24 hours before the attack on the Smith family on a neighbouring smallholding.
The attackers cut through a fence to gain access to the home where the Smith family lives.
Mr Smith was admitted to hospital for treatment but luckily no major arteries were hit and he was already discharged from hospital.
No arrest had been made.
