Elderly Swiss couple's nightmare holiday in South Africa

An elderly Swiss couple’s vacation turned into a nightmare when the man became ill a few days after their arrival and the woman was hijacked.

The couple is now being treated in a Johannesburg hospital and say they cannot wait to leave South Africa and return home.

Lisbeth Scalabrini (73) said that she and her husband Fabeo (79) would never visit South African again. It was the couple’s fourth visit to the country.

Fabeo became sick two days after their arrival and was admitted to a hospital in Rustenburg.

Fabeo was transferred to a hospital in Johannesburg, and his wife Lisbeth rented a car to travel from Rustenburg to Johannesburg to visit him.

On Monday, Lisbeth was hijacked around 14H00 between Johannesburg and Pretoria and taken to the Alexander Clinic. She remembers nothing about the incident except that she stopped somewhere to check her map.

Lisbeth said that the couple looked forward to their holiday and enjoy the warm Cape weather. Now they cannot wait to go back to Switzerland. She said, “It is not very good for the country (South Africa). We want to go back as soon as possible, my husband would not want to stay here and I would never dream of returning.”

Lisbeth’s ring finger on her right hand was broken and her face swollen from injuries sustained and she suffered several other minor injuries.

Fabeo is still in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
