Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has addressed the recent eviction of residents from a block of flats in Germiston, stressing the need to uphold housing laws and crack down on illegal occupation.
Speaking at the scene, Mayor Xhakaza expressed concern over individuals living rent-free in the building, stating that the city cannot allow unlawful occupation to persist. His remarks came as tensions flared following the eviction of several residents accused of occupying the property illegally.
“There’s a combination of factors—when there’s lawlessness and no tough stance on wrongdoing, people take advantage,” Xhakaza said. “If left unchecked, entire buildings fall into the wrong hands, leading to further disorder.”
The mayor acknowledged past struggles with restoring order in the area, citing repeated attempts to address unlawful occupation. He emphasized that the municipality remains committed to enforcing housing regulations while protecting lawful tenants.
“Our communities support this action—they want law and order restored,” Xhakaza stated. “We cannot allow intimidation or property destruction to dictate how we govern.”
The evictions have sparked debate over housing rights and municipal enforcement, with some residents resisting the removals. The mayor, however, insists that the city’s stance is necessary to prevent further deterioration of public order.
Xhakaza is expected to provide further details in an upcoming interview.
