Hundreds of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters on Wednesday gathered in the Pretoria CBD for the party’s “day of action” to call for President Jacob Zuma and National Prosecution Authority (NPA) head Shaun Abrahams to step down.

The EFF “day of action” coincides with the second day of President Jacob Zuma’s court application to interdict the publication of the Public Protector’s “state capture” report on allegations that the controversial Gupta family may have had undue influence on the appointment of ministers.

EFF supporters held an overnight vigil at the Church Square.

Clad in red party regalia energetic supporters made it clear they were fed up with corruption. Some carried placards that read; “Fees must fall”, “Urgent – JG Zuma please resign” and “Defend the democratic State”.

They also danced and sang along to loud music blasting from an EFF branded truck. They played “revolutionary songs” that praise EFF leader Julius Malema.

“I am here for my children’s future. This country needs change and Malema will bring that change. Zuma must go, he has eaten enough. I used to love the ANC but no more,” said 40-year-old Dan Mabe from Brits.

He said he had arrived with his fellow “fighters” by bus earlier to join the march in the country’s capital.

The red berets protested outside the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday as Zuma’s application to interdict so called state capture report by the Public Protector was being heard.

A full bench of judges granted opposition parties such as the DA, EFF and UDM access to intervene against Zuma’s bid to block the release of the much awaited report.

The EFF march was initially planned to coincide with the appearance in the high court of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and former SARS top officials Ivan Pillay and Oupa Magashula on fraud charges.

However, Abrahams on Monday withdrew the charges against the three, which were related to granting Pillay early retirement from SARS by Gordhan and Magashula.
