The FF Plus is concerned about the state of public infrastructure in the Ekurhuleni Metro after the earthquake of 11 June, which measured 4,4 on the Richter scale.

That is why the party requested Ekurhuleni’s city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, to instruct the Department of City Planning and Infrastructure to compile a report on it to be tabled with the next council meeting.

Among other things, the licensing offices in Wadeville had to be temporarily closed after structural damage caused by the earthquake had been reported.

Although the earthquake is considered light, the tremor was substantial enough to be felt in large parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The FF Plus will, furthermore, request that a plan with timelines must be drawn up to repair the damaged infrastructure under the Metro’s jurisdiction.

Seeing as sinkholes are also a problem in Ekurhuleni, which can be exacerbated by earthquakes, the party insists that a survey of all the sinkholes in the Metro must be conducted and relevant repair plans must be drawn up.

The combination of earthquakes and sinkholes has the potential to cause severe damage to infrastructure, thus endangering lives.

The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on the Ekurhuleni Metro to ensure that these issues are addressed in the interest of all the Metro’s residents.
