E-toll system: Schizophrenic ANC’s planned march against itself

The ANC’s decision to hold a march against itself in protest of, among other things, e-toll by marching to the Union Buildings in Pretoria is indicative of a party that has fallen seriously ill with a case of schizophrenia and an unhealthy underestimation of the intelligence of voters.

The march against itself will not fool voters into thinking that it was not the ANC that implemented the e-toll system against the wishes of the people of Gauteng and it will certainly not convince the voters that the ANC will abolish the system voluntarily.

During his supplementary budget speech, the Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, made it very clear that the e-toll system is here to stay. The ANC has, therefore, planted its flag in the ground on the issue and the Gauteng ANC’s march will not change the perception that the ANC is the villain.

Chances are that with his decision regarding e-toll, Minister Mboweni doomed the ANC in Gauteng to an election result of only 50%, which will force the party to take in coalition partners in order to survive, if it can find any volunteers, that is.

It now affords the opposition the opportunity to create their own coalition and take over the province’s administration.

The FF Plus remains strongly opposed to the e-toll system and as the fourth largest party in Gauteng, it is standing ready to take over the provincial government as part of a future opposition coalition and to declare a formal dispute against the national government over e-toll.
