A 25-year-old Brazilian national was arrested on Tuesday upon arrival at OR Tambo International Airport after authorities uncovered approximately 10kg of cocaine worth R4.2 million in his luggage.
The suspect had travelled from São Paulo, Brazil, via Doha, Qatar, before landing in Johannesburg. Acting on prior intelligence, a joint operation involving Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Intel Gauteng, the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) SAPS Tactical Team, the Border Management Authority (BMA), and private security swiftly intercepted the suspect.
Following a search of his belongings, police discovered the concealed cocaine. The suspect was also subjected to a medical examination to determine whether he had ingested drug-filled bullets as part of his smuggling method.
This arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to dismantle transnational drug syndicates. Through intelligence-led operations, more than 25 drug traffickers have been apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport since the beginning of 2025.
Authorities have praised the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies in curbing the flow of narcotics into the country. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
