JOHANNESBURB, GAUTENG — A tragic Doornfontein building fire in Johannesburg has claimed the lives of five people, including two children, after severe overcrowding and locked exits hindered escape efforts from a three-story residential structure.

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services responded to the blaze at approximately 11:57 at a privately owned building known as Quality Springs, located on Davy Street in Doornfontein. By the time crews arrived, the fire had already taken a devastating toll. While the flames have since been extinguished, emergency personnel were unable to save the five victims despite extensive evacuation efforts.

Kagiso Phasha, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, confirmed that additional individuals sustained injuries while attempting to flee the burning structure. However, the exact number of wounded remains unaccounted for. Phasha noted that many injured individuals fled the scene immediately and declined medical assistance, making it impossible for first responders to provide an accurate casualty count. Among those who did interact with emergency crews, minor injuries such as leg lacerations were observed.

A critical factor in the high casualty rate was the building’s layout and occupancy. Upon arrival, firefighters found the three-story building to be heavily overcrowded. Furthermore, several emergency exits had been locked or closed off. Phasha suggested that the exits were likely sealed by occupants as a security measure against crime, a decision that tragically backfired by preventing a safe escape during the emergency.

The identities and nationalities of the deceased and injured remain unknown. Emergency services have handed the scene over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who will lead the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire and the victims’ backgrounds.

When questioned about whether the Quality Springs building was among the numerous abandoned or non-compliant structures in the Johannesburg CBD—a pressing issue highlighted with the June 30th compliance deadlines approaching—Phasha stated that the building’s official compliance status is still under review. He reiterated that the primary focus of the initial response remained on rescue operations and confirmed only that the structure was severely overcrowded at the time of the incident.

Investigations into the exact cause of the Doornfontein building fire are currently underway.
