Violent protests have broken out in Diepsloot, Soweto during the night and a police officer has been killed. It is uncertain if the killing of the policeman was a separate incident or related to the riots. Roads have been closed, and the South African police and metro police were deployed to the troubled area.

There are reports that live ammunition is being used and looting taking place. Demonstrators are burning tyres and throwing stones, and rocks at passing vehicles on the R511. There are reports that an ambulance has been damaged, and people have looted the Diepsloot Mall.

There have been some protests around South Africa recently, and the latest one in Diepsloot is another riot where disgruntled people are demanding action from the government. Protests are evil and damaging, and the demonstrators have no respect for the communities and individuals who refrain from such destructive action.

Most of the previous protests involved looting, and it seems to be a recurring pattern. A question must be asked if the demonstrators do not start protests to loot the shops and malls. Perhaps it is a group of desperate people who are behind some of these protests. Possibly the riots are not about service deliveries but for the opportunity to steal.
