The DA controlled Tshwane Metro Council, which manages Pretoria, has written off nearly R400 million of so called “unrecoverable debt of the poor”.

This debt includes electricity bills, property rates and taxes, as well as sanitation and garbage disposal accounts.

A further R754 million outstanding debt will be reconsidered in twelve months and possibly also be written off.

This means that about R1 billion of debt is just being written off.

There are even councilors amongst those who owed this money.

Observers are convinced that the decision was taken at the insistence of the DA’s coalition partner, the EFF. And that this write off of debt only creates a precedent that will be repeated in the future, and which will deepen the culture of non payment.

The residents who benefited from this are warned that they will have to prepare themselves for a drastic price increase for these services, taxes and charges to balance the budget.
