REIGER PARK, Gauteng — A tragic Reiger Park ambush has claimed the lives of two Gauteng police officers and two civilians, an act the provincial Premier has condemned as a direct “declaration of war” against the state. The Anti-Gang Unit members were conducting an evening patrol in Ekurhuleni when they were ruthlessly gunned down, sparking a massive manhunt and urgent appeals for community assistance.

According to Gauteng Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the fallen officers were part of a specialized crime prevention team when they heard initial gunfire in the area. Driving toward the source of the shots—reportedly pursuing a red Volkswagen Polo linked to criminal targets—the unit was violently ambushed. The ensuing shootout resulted in the police vehicle ramming into a residential wall and fence, leaving the streets stained with blood and triggering a high-visibility law enforcement lockdown.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the active crime scene, noting that top leadership, including Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, immediately descended upon the area. Alongside the two fallen constables, two female civilians who were in a nearby vehicle also lost their lives in the crossfire.

“An Attack on the State”

Arriving at the scene, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed profound outrage, labeling the execution-style attack on law enforcement as an assault on the nation itself.

“If you attack a policeman, you are openly attacking the state. What has just happened here is nothing else but a declaration of war, and we have to respond,” Lesufi stated. He assured residents that perpetrators would regret the moment they targeted the state’s last line of defense, promising that suspects will be hunted down relentlessly.

Commissioner Mthombeni outlined a strict “lock grid” strategy to track the suspects, bolstered by high-level crime intelligence. He noted that while Reiger Park remains a focal point for anti-gang operations, provincial resources are simultaneously stretched across other hotspots. Mthombeni highlighted recent successful crackdowns on illegal mining syndicates in the West Rand alongside the South African National Defence Force, which resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of an AK-47.

A National Plea for Justice

The brutality of the ambush prompted Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane to issue an emotional, earnest appeal to the local community. Dimpane urged residents not to harbor the ruthless killers, emphasizing that someone in the community knows who planned the attack, who pulled the trigger, and where the suspects are hiding.

“Our members are not just police officers; they are fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, and daughters who leave their homes every day not knowing whether or not they may return,” Dimpane said.

She promised that the South African Police Service would “leave no stone unturned” to bring the perpetrators before the courts, warning that community silence only emboldens criminals who continue to terrorize their own neighborhoods.

A Community Reeling from Gang Violence

The ambush has left the Reiger Park community emotional and demanding urgent government intervention. The area is no stranger to severe gang violence; just last year, a local drive-by shooting claimed six lives and injured three others.

Speaking out of fear of victimization, one local resident who heard the crash of the police van pleaded directly with local parents to stop shielding criminals. “If you know that your child is busy with wrongdoings, please stop protecting them. Take them to the police station and let the police deal with them,” she urged, expressing deep grief over the fallen officers and civilians who “didn’t deserve to die like that.”

As specialized investigative units flood the streets of Ekurhuleni, authorities are asking anyone with information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to come forward to help bring the killers to justice.
