Johannesburg: The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will argue in the Constitutional Court for the right to privately prosecute people who abuse animals when the NPA decides not to prosecute. The national director of public prosecutions and the Justice minister are opposing the application.

Pretoria: The defamation lawsuit by former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils is expected to be heard in the high court in Pretoria. It was meant to have started on Monday but was postponed to allow the Umkonto weSizwe Military Veterans’ Association join the matter. Kasrils is suing Kebby Maphatsoe for R1 million.

Pietermaritzburg: A man charged with the murders of two African National Congress (ANC) activists who were shot dead in cold blood while returning home following a branch meeting is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. Bonginkosi Shabalala, a former Ward J branch treasurer for the ANC in Imbali, is accused of shooting Phetheni Ngubane, 50, and her friend, another ANC activist, 54-year-old Badedile Tshapha, as they left an ANC branch election meeting in Imbali in June.
