Hlengani Voster Maluleke (41) appeared in the Brixton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 12 June 2023 facing a charge of corruption. He was arrested during a sting operation executed by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Johannesburg while he came to collect R1000-00 gratification at the Brixton Shoprite Checkers on 18 July 2022.
Maluleke reportedly conducted inspections at the Brixton Shoprite Checkers and inconsistencies in terms of environmental issues were found in the store. He subsequently issued the store with a R5000-00 fine on 13 July 2022.
On 15 July 2022, the suspect visited the store again and demanded R1000-00 to squash the fine.
The matter was reported to the Hawks for further exploration which led to his arrest. The suspect was released on bail of R1000-00 on 19 July 2022.
After several court appearances and lengthy trial, Maluleke absconded and he was rearrested on Monday, 12 June 2023 where he briefly appeared in the same court.
His bail was forfeited to the State and the case was postponed to 23 June 2023 for judgement.
On a separate and unrelated matter, Silas Ndifhedzo Munyai (36) was rearrested and placed back on the court roll on Monday, 12 June 2023. He was released on bail when he appeared in the Booysens Magistrates’ Court facing a charge of corruption on 27 March 2019.
Munyai allegedly approached City Power’s client who owed over R16 000-00 electricity bill, he demanded R7500-00 as a gratuity to help her clear her exorbitant electricity bill.
The matter was reported to the Hawks for investigation and Munyai was arrested at Southgate mall during a sting operation executed by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Germiston on 26 March 2019.
A warrant for his arrest was issued when he did not return to court after he had been released on bail. His bail money was forfeited to the State and the case was postponed to 14 June 2023 for legal representation.
