A police Sergeant, a Constable and an alleged accomplice appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Wednesday 12 February 2020, for corruption and extortion charges for allegedly trying to extort R200 000-00 from a Gauteng resident.

Sergeant Andries Japhter Phukubje (42), Constable Rosinah Kedibone Komana (40) both attached to the Benoni Flying Squad together with their accomplice Stephen Tshepo Rakgatho (50) were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation on Tuesday 11 February 2020, at Edleen in Norkem Park after they allegedly solicited and demanded R200 000-00 from the complainant.

It is alleged that on Saturday, the trio stormed the complainant’s house brandishing rifles and demanded entry into his house. They claimed to be investigating allegations of fake diesel that was being stored in his yard.

During the encounter they allegedly demanded a R200 000-00 gratification in order for him not to be arrested.

The complainant handed them R50 000-00 in cash and agreed to pay the balance on the Monday. The incident was reported to the Hawks who on Tuesday conducted an undercover operation which resulted in the arrest of the three suspects immediately after the outstanding balance was paid to them.

The trio were granted bail of R5000-00 respectively. The case is postponed to 17 March 2020 for further investigation.
