Chaos erupted in Diepkloof, Soweto, this morning as residents looted a truck carrying fish during a live broadcast. The incident occurred amid a protest over sanitation issues, with demonstrators blockading the Diepkloof interchange, causing major traffic disruptions.

Dramatic footage showed residents swarming the truck, grabbing fish after the vehicle allegedly attempted to force its way through barricades made of large stones. A reporter reporting from the scene, described the tense situation, noting that the crew had to move quickly to avoid being caught in the commotion.
“The residents are taking the fish that spilled when the truck tried to pass forcefully,” he explained, adding that protests over service delivery were a recurring issue in the area.
Protest Over Sanitation and Land Disputes
An induna (community leader) interviewed during the broadcast expressed frustration over unresolved grievances, including poor sanitation and concerns about land being sold without clarity on residents’ future.
“People are not being taken seriously,” the induna said, highlighting fears over displacement for more than 4,000 residents living on the contested land.
Journalists Forced to Flee
At one point, the reporting team was reportedly chased by protesters, underscoring the volatility of the situation. Authorities have yet to restore order, with the induna admitting that community leaders struggle to control the crowd once tensions escalate.
Motorists are advised to avoid the Diepkloof interchange as protests continue.
