Centurion abalone bust, accused sentenced

Guret Noor (28) has been convicted and sentenced to six years imprisonment in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 February 2023, for contravening the marine living resources Act as well as bribery.

The sentence stems from a Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime investigation which arose from a tip-off declaring that Noor reportedly had abalone at his wholesale store at the corner of R144 near William Nicol, Centurion.

The search at the premises led to the discovery and seizure of processed abalone to the value of over R160 000-00 on Monday, 13 September 2021.

Noor was arrested on the spot but not before he offered a R10 000-00 bribe for his freedom.

The incorruptible arresting officer instead confiscated the money and added a count of corruption on the charge sheet. The court has sentenced Noor to six years imprisonment for possession of abalone.

The court has however suspended the sentence for five years on condition that he doesn’t reoffend.

He was additionally sentenced on the count of corruption to a R10 000-00 fine, further declared unfit to possess firearm.
