This evening, 28 June 2018, around 18:00 armed robbers were forced to abandon their efforts to rob a CIT vehicle due to security measures in place by the SAPS.

A group of armed men traveling in sedans and light delivery vehicles, attempted to rob a cash in transit vehicle in the Gezina area in Pretoria, Gauteng. They were forced to abandon the CIT vehicle and flee when they realised that it was a futile exercise due to tough security interventions.

On the 4th of June 2018 Minister of Police, Bheki Cele and National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla John Sitole introduced a stabilisation operation which involved extraordinary measures after South Africa was plagued with CIT robberies. Since the immediate implementation of these nationwide operations several suspects have been brought to book, including number two in the top 20 (CIT robbers) in the country and CIT robberies have since then been reduced drastically.

The success of this initiative can be attributed to high density integrated operations by the South African Police Service, Metro Police, South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) and CIT security companies.

“We are serious about stamping the authority of the State, the full might of the law will be felt in all corners of our land and our members on the ground are ready to take on criminals toe to toe. This is to ensure we put a permanent stop to this scourge of crimes, that terrorizes ordinary South Africans,”said Minister Cele.

“We will continue to saturate our streets with men and women in blue to ensure that criminals have no space to manoeuvre”, said General Khehla John Sitole

“Police as well as Security companies must be praised for their rapid response to the attempted robbery on the CIT vehicle this evening in Gezina as well as the continuous efforts that are being made to combat this crime”, added General Sitole.
