The police in Gauteng must be held accountable for their brutal and unlawful conduct towards the public, and must not use tax money to pay for civil claims.

In response to a question from the FF Plus, the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, confirmed that the police received claims amounting to R3,7 billion in the 2021/22 financial year and paid out R78 million.

The MEC also confirmed that no disciplinary steps had been taken against any policeman.

The FF Plus in Gauteng insists that civil cases must be investigated and if there are any signs that the police were guilty of unlawful conduct, then disciplinary action must be taken against the relevant officer or officers.

The money paid out for claims must rather be used for training, procuring more vehicles, ammunition, firearms and uniforms.

The FF Plus frequently calls on the provincial Police Commissioner, Lt.-Gen. Elias Mawela, to see to it that police officers get proper training and enough equipment.
